Interpretations of the Fixed Stars

Sun conjunct Acumen,  Orb: 0 deg 59 min

A sharp, clear and discerning mind is indicated. A direct and unapologetic approach to meeting challenges is likely. A combative and militant stance may be easily assumed for self-protection.

The individual may undergo one or several complete psychological or spiritual transformations throughout the course of their life. The dynamic interplay between the forces of life and death, or sickness and health, may also play a crucial role in existence. Therapeutic, intellectual, creative, athletic and extramundane pursuits are favored.

Acumen is M7, an open cluster of stars in the constellation of Scorpio, the Scorpion. Today this star cluster is known as the « Ptolemy Cluster », as Ptolemy was the first to record its nature, describing it as a nebula in the year 130 CE.

Acumen is a Latin word meaning « Sharp Point ». This star cluster resides in the barbed tail of the celestial Scorpion. Today the word acumen is used in English to describe the ability to think clearly, to reason and discern. This concept may also pertain to the astrological influence of M7.

Robson states that Acumen is « of the nature of Mars and the Moon ».

The constellation of Scorpio is representative of the mythical scorpion which defeated the great hunter Orion. Different variations on this legend credit such goddesses as Hera, Artemis and Gaia with invoking the scorpion’s wrath against the hunter. The constellations of Scorpio and Orion are in opposition to each other in the sky, as if perpetually chasing and fleeing one another. The association of this constellation with the venomous scorpion has a long history. The Akkadians knew it as Girtab, which translates to « Stinger », « Seizer », or « Place Where One Bows Down ».

The Ancient Egyptians associated the Scorpion with the Serket, a goddess of healing and medicinal knowledge. This might at first seem like an incongruous association, as scorpions are commonly thought to inflict pain, not heal wounds. In recent years, however, scientists have recognized the powerful benefits of chlorotoxin, a chemical component of scorpion venom, in the treatment of brain tumors and other diseases. In Cuba, researchers became aware of the healing properties of scorpion venom after observing it’s use by local folk doctors. The ancient Egyptians were undoubtedly aware of this phenomenon as well.

Even with knowledge of the scorpion’s curative properties, the creature’s intimate relationship with death must not be forgotten. The name Serket is often translated as « One Who Tightens the Throat » and alternately as « One Who Allows the Throat to Breathe ». The line of demarcation between life and death is her domain, and the decision to revive or to release is her prerogative. Themes of transformation and regeneration are implied.

According to Robson, Scorpio corresponds to the Hebrew letter Oin (Ayin) and the 16th Tarot Trump, « The Lighting Struck Tower ». This Tarot trump, like the scorpion, represents a drastic and complete transformation of spirit and form.

Sun conjunct Sinistra,  Orb: 0 deg 02 min

An extremely independent, imaginative, intuitive, eloquent, free thinking and creative character is denoted. The inclination to diverge from social norms or to promote new ideas is strong. An aptitude for abstract thought and creative genius is also indicated. Many diverse talents may manifest. Philosophical, medical, scientific, linguistic, spiritual, artistic and intellectual pursuits are favored. There may also be a willingness to deal with the unsavory, morbid and carnal aspects of life.

Sinistra is Nu Ophiuchi in the constellation of Ophiuchus, the Serpent Holder. The name Sinistra is Latin for « the Left Side » or « the Left Hand ».

The left side of the body, and the left hand in particular, is fraught with symbolic cultural meaning. In Hebrew, Semitic and Mesopotamian languages, the hand is a symbol of power. This makes sense because as human beings our hands are the instruments through which we execute all actions. In the ancient Near East, the left hand symbolized the power to bring misfortune to ones fellow man. It thus became an icon of inherent evil, ill luck and the punishment of the gods. This concept was inherited by the Catholic church and diffused into all of Western society. The Latin sinistra is the root of the English word sinister. In modern European languages such as English, French, Spanish and Italian right is usually synonymous with goodness, correctness and skill, while left connotes not only evil but awkwardness and incompetence.

The term « left hand path », originally used by practitioners of Tantra to describe rigorous and often macabre spiritual disciplines, has become synonymous in the West with the glorification of the self and concern for worldly rather than spiritual matters. The introduction of this term to the West is usually attributed to H. P. Blavatsky, the founder of the Theosophical Society. Congruently, in China the term « left path » alludes to an immoral or illegal lifestyle.

In light of these negative connotations, it is interesting to note that modern scientific research has linked left hand dominance to high levels of mental achievement and creativity. The left side of the body is ruled by the right hemisphere of the brain, the hemisphere which governs abstract thought and imagination. Recent studies have also unearthed a connection between the left hand and the language centers of the brain.

The powers ascribed to the left hand by both cultural tradition and science may relate to the influence of Sinistra.

The constellation of the Serpent Holder divides the two-part constellation Serpens, the Serpent.

Due to Ophiuchus’ position on the ecliptic plane, it is sometimes referred to as the « thirteenth zodiac sign ».

Ophiuchus may represent a few different Classical figures. One is the legendary physician Asclepius, whose serpent-entwined staff (also a symbol of Hermes/Mercury) is still an icon of the medical profession today. According to legend, Asclepius learned the secret of immortality by watching one serpent bring another certain healing herbs. Zeus killed Asclepius to keep the human race mortal, placing him in the sky as a constellation. In this case, Ophiucus/Serpens would indicate medical knowledge and skill, as well as the Mercurial attributes of speed and intelligence.

Another figure who is often associated with Ophiucus/Serpens is Laocoon, the priest who was killed by serpents after warning the Trojans of the dangerous and deceptive nature of the Trojan horse. In this case Ophiucus may represent a prophet whose insights are ignored.

In another tale dealing with prophecy, Serpens is cast as Python, an earth dragon residing at Delphi. Delphi was considered by the ancient Greeks to be the center of the Earth, and was home to oracular priestesses. Python was killed by Apollo, the god of light and reason, when he infiltrated Delphi and claimed it as his own. In this case Ophiuchus would be Apollo in his form Serpent-Killer, a symbol of the dominion of logic and reason over emotion and intuition, qualities associated with Serpens/Python. The duality between Apollo and Python reflects the right hand/left hand dichotomy insinuated by the title Sinistra.

Of the influence of this constellation Robson states, « According to Ptolemy it is like Saturn and moderately like Venus. It is said to give a passionate, blindly good-hearted, wasteful and easily seduced nature. . .This constellation has also been called Asclepius, and held to rule medicines. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Oin and the 16th Tarot Trump, the Lightning-Struck Tower. »

Of Sinistra specifically Robson reiterates that it is primarily Saturnian and secondarily Venusian in nature. In accordance with tradition, Robson assigns an « immoral » influence to this star.

Moon conjunct Almach,  Orb: 0 deg 33 min

Popular, gregarious, jocund, resourceful and opportunistic attributes are denoted. A love of beauty, pleasure and entertainment is likely. The individual may use charm to improve their social standing. Sudden and unexpected events which change the course of ones life may occur. Aesthetic or theatrical talents may develop.

Almach is Gamma Andromedae in the constellation of Andromeda, the « Chained Woman ».

The name Almach comes from the Arabic Al Anak Al Nard, which refers to a small Arabian animal of the Mustelidae family, which includes badgers, ferrets, otters, minks and martens. These animals are mostly carnivorous and nocturnal, and are known for their resourcefulness, playfulness, intelligence, cunning and bravery. These qualities may be ascribed to the nature of Almach as well.

According to Robson, Almach is « of the nature of Venus » and « gives honor, eminence and artistic ability ». According to Ebertin, Almach « has a Venus character and a faint Jupiter like influence. It is supposed to give a cheerful nature and a liking for change and diversion and amusement. » This description closely matches that of the Mustelidae. Ebertin also states that, « The popularity of these people (Almach natives) will bring benefits from others. »

The name Andromeda comes from the Greek for « Thoughts of Man » or « To Think of a Man ».

In Greek mythology, Andromeda was the beautiful daughter of Queen Cassiopeia and King Cepheus of Ethiopia. The queen proudly boasted that her daughter was even more beautiful than the ocean dwelling nymphs known as the Nereids. This angered the ocean god Poseidon, who sent a powerful sea monster to wreck havoc on the land. The King and Queen were at a loss as to how to appease this destructive spirit. They consulted an oracle who told them that the lovely Andromeda must be sacrificed to the monster. Andromeda was chained to a rocky cliff to await her demise, until the hero Perseus descended upon the monster wielding the head of Medusa. The sight of this hideous talisman turned the beast to stone, and thus Andromeda’s life was spared.

In this story the figure of Andromeda is characterized as being eternally at the mercy of uncontrollable external forces, from her mother’s hubris to the monster’s attack and her subsequent sacrifice to her last minute rescue by Perseus. She may represent the aspect of life in which we are blown by the winds of fate and circumstance, without choice.

Robson quotes Ptolemy, citing a Venusian influence for this constellation. Robson goes on to profess that Andromeda « is said to bestow purity of thought, virtue, honor and dignity upon it’s natives, but to cause battle with chimerical fears and a tendency to become easily discouraged. » It is also noted that Andromeda is equated with the Hebrew letter Pe and the 17th Tarot Trump, « the Star ».

Moon conjunct Menkar,  Orb: 0 deg 27 min

Passionate emotional urges, a love of solitude and inner contemplation, and a strong connection to one’s subconscious or imaginative faculties are indicated characteristics. Personal strengths include memory and intuition. Great adversities throughout life which test the resolve of the individual ultimately produce an inner vitality able to withstand calamity. Spiritual, psychological, philosophical, musical, artistic and literary pursuits are favored.

Menkar is Beta Ceti in the constellation of Cetus, the Whale. The name Menkar is derived from the Arabic Al Minliar, meaning « the Nose (of the Whale) ». Allen notes that this star actually marks « the Monster’s open jaws ».

In China, this star is known as Tseen Kwan, « Heaven’s Round Granary », a title alluding to themes of material accumulation and financial stability.

The constellation of Cetus, the Whale (or Sea Monster), is most commonly identified as the creature sent by Poseidon to devour the princess Andromeda as punishment for her mother’s hubris. Earlier Greek legends correlated this constellation to the Gateposts of the Underworld. The Mesopotamians identified it with Tiamat, the serpentine sea goddess of primordial chaos. A similar figure to Cetus/Tiamat is Leviathan, a Biblical sea monster who is referred to as both a monstrous fish and a whale. Chinese mythology provides the character of Yu-kiang, the monstrous lord of the depths, who is described as a human-handed whale. These ancient sea beasts may be personifications of the terrifying destructive powers of the ocean, and perhaps the human fear of the unknown. Their presence reminds of larger and older powers than humanity. Memory, initiation, death and rebirth are themes that may correlate to Cetus in it’s association with the Gateposts of the Underworld as well as it’s position near the tail end of Pisces in the sidereal zodiac.

Of the nature of the constellation Cetus Robson states, « According to Ptolemy this constellation is like Saturn. It is said to cause laziness and idleness, but to confer an emotional and charitable nature, with ability to command. »

Of Menkar specifically Robson states, « According to Ptolemy it is if the nature of Saturn; to Simmonite, of Mars; and, to Alvidas, of Venus and the Moon. » Ebertin echoes Ptolemy, citing a Saturnian nature in allegiance with Menkar, « corresponding to impediments of many kinds, worries, and tests of endurance, in some kinds hardening and toughening these particular individuals. » These initiatory trials may be symbolically represented by the Gateposts of the Underworld associated with Cetus by the Greeks, as well as the « the Monster’s open jaws » marked in the sky by Menkar.

Moon conjunct Tsih,  Orb: 0 deg 51 min

Proud, noble, dignified and self-loving attributes are denoted. A position of great wisdom, eminence or expertise may be attained. There may also be some tendency towards arrogance and severity.

Tsih is Gamma Cassiopeiae in the constellation of Cassiopeia, the Queen. The name Tsih is Mandarin Chinese for « the Whip ». This title highlights the domineering and autocratic qualities often associated with Cassiopeia.

In Greek mythology, Cassiopeia (whose name means « She Whose Words Excel »),  was the Queen of Ethiopia. She was the wife of King Cepheus and the mother of the beautiful princess Andromeda.

Cassiopeia was known for her pride and vanity. She arrogantly boasted that her daughter was even more beautiful than the ocean dwelling nymphs known as the Nereids. This angered the ocean god Poseidon, who sent a powerful sea monster to wreck havoc on the land. The King and Queen were at a loss as to how to appease this destructive spirit. They consulted an oracle who told them that the lovely Andromeda must be sacrificed to the monster. The sight of this hideous talisman turned the beast to stone, and thus Andromeda’s life was spared.

Of the influence of this constellation Robson states; « According to Ptolemy this constellation is of the nature of Saturn and Venus. It is said to give haughtiness, boastfulness and exaggerated pride, but at the same time the power of commanding respect. It is associated by the Kabalists with the Hebrew letter Beth and the 2nd Tarot Trump, the High Priestess. »

Moon conjunct Zibal,  Orb: 0 deg 57 min

A contemplative and thoughtful nature may be indicated, as may a deep interest in human psychology, emotions and personal relationships.

Zibal is Zeta Eridani in the constellation of Eridanus, the River. The name Zibal is derived from the Arabic Al Rial, meaning « the Little Ostriches ». With Eta, Rho and Sigma Eridani this star was included in the Arabic asterism Al-Udhiyy,  meaning « Ostrich Nest » or « the Hatching Place ». This asterism may relate to the incubation, development and growth of  talents or aspects of the pysche.

The constellation of Eridanus is most commonly associated with the Greek tale of Phaeton, the son of a mortal woman and the Sun god Helios. Helios had sworn to grant his son one wish. Phaeton foolishly asked to drive Helios’ Solar Chariot across the sky for one day. The god knew this was a bad idea, but he was bound by his promise, so he begrudgingly let Phaeton take the reins. Phaeton soon realized he could not control the celestial horses that drew the Chariot of the Sun. They ran wild, first galloping too close to the Earth and causing it to burn, then veering too far away, causing it to freeze. Phaeton’s wild ride was finally ceased when Zeus shot him down with a thunderbolt and restored Helios to his proper place at the reins of the Chariot. The constellation of Eridanus is a long zig-zagging line of stars, and it is said to represent the haphazard path along which Phaeton careened in the Solar Chariot.

In a slightly different interpretation of the tale, Eridanus represents the river in the Underworld into which Phaeton fell after being struck down by Zeus. Classical Greek writings suggest that this mythological river of the Underworld was also a real river on Earth. Writers like Hesiod and Herdotus asserted that Eridanos was a river in Northern Europe rich in amber. Scholars have since speculated about which river these writers were actually referring to, but no conclusions have been reached. The name Eridanos has also recently been adopted by geologists to describe a river that flowed from Lapland to the North Sea between 40 million and 700 thousand years ago.

Another mythical figure associated with this constellation is Aquarius, the Water Bearer. The river Eridanus is sometimes identified as the water which flows from the Water Bearer’s vessel. In Aquarius’ role as catalyst of the Great Flood which drowned the Earth according to Ancient Near Eastern legend, Eridanus would in fact be the Great Flood itself. This event is an elemental cataclysm not unlike Phaeton’s disastrous ride through the heavens.

Of the nature of this constellation, Robson writes « According to Ptolemy, all the stars with the exception of Achernar are like Saturn. Eridanus gives a love of knowledge and science, much travel and many changes, a position of authority, but danger of accidents ».

Venus conjunct Rasalhague,  Orb: 0 deg 21 min

Intuition, empathy and intelligence are indicated, as are seductive and emotionally expressive qualities. A love of romance, pleasure and extravagance is likely. There may also be a natural talent for healing and the medical arts. Interests may lie in philosophical, psychological or religious subjects.

According to Robson, « Quick mind, well educated, cautious, secretive. . . »

Rasalhague is Alpha Ophiuchi in the constellation of Ophiuchus, the Serpent Holder. The name Rasalhague is derived from the Arabic phrase Al Ras al Hawwa, meaning « the Head of the Snake Charmer », which this star designates.

It was also known in ancient Arabia as Al Rai, « the Shepherd’, a title denoting themes of leadership and authority.

In China this star is referred to as How, or « the Duke ».

Of the character of Rasalhague Robson states, « According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Saturn and Venus; and, to Alvidas, of Jupiter and Mercury in sextile to Mars. » Ebertin also cites Saturnian and Venusian attributes in relation to this star’s influence, as well as Neptunian ones. Both writers connect Rasalhague to a tendency towards overindulgence and debauchery.

The constellation of the Serpent Holder divides the two-part constellation Serpens, the Serpent.

Mars conjunct Al Athafar Al Dhib,  Orb: 0 deg 56 min

Passionate, intense, aggressive, determined, contentious and combative attributes may be denoted.

Al Athafar Al Dhib is Omega Draconis in the constellation Draco, the Dragon. Al Athafar Al Dhib is an Arabic term meaning « the Hyena’s Claws ». This title arose from the ancient Arabic perception of the stars of Draco as a group of mother camels protecting their young from a group of hungry hyenas. This star was among the hyenas. As a part of this threatening force, Al Athafar Al Dhib may be connected to concepts of aggression and hostility.

In other ancient civilizations, the constellation of Draco was seen as a powerful and fearsome entity. The Egyptians associated it with Tawaret, whose name means « Great One ». This hippopotamus-headed goddess, sometimes pictured with the back of a crocodile and legs of a lioness, presided over pregnancy and childbirth as well as all forms of protection. There is a clear thematic correlation between Tawaret’s ferocious motherly instinct to protect and the story of the Mother Camels.

In Babylon, Draco was associated with Tiamat, the great serpent goddess of primordial chaos, whose name may mean « Life Mother ». In early Hindu worship, the constellation was know as Shi-Shu-Mara, or « the Alligator ». In Persia it was Azdeha, « the Man Eating Serpent ».

In Classical times Draco was associated with many serpentine monsters. Most commonly it corresponded to Ladon, the dragon who guarded Hera’s tree of Golden Apples in the Garden of the Hesperides. Ladon was murdered by Heracles, who stole the Golden Apples as the eleventh of his twelve Heroic Labors. The Classical image of Ladon wrapped around the apple tree has been linked to the Biblical Garden of Eden myth, in which the Serpent tempts Eve with an apple from the Tree of Knowledge, leading to the Fall of Man.

Regarding the astrological significance of this constellation, Robson states, « According to Ptolemy, the bright stars are like Saturn and Mars. Draco gives an artistic and emotional yet somber nature, a penetrating and analytical mind, much travel and many friends. . .By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Mem and the 13th Tarot Trump, Death. »

Mars conjunct Alminliar Shuja,  Orb: 0 deg 09 min

Strong emotional and instinctual urges are indicated. Secretive and defensive qualities may manifest. An interest in extramundane matters is possible.

Alminliar Shuja is Sigma Hydrae in the constellation of Hydra, the Water Snake. This stars name comes from the Arabic Al Minchar al Shuja, or « the Nose of the Snake ». It is also sometimes referred to as Minchir or Minchar.

The constellation Hydra is thought to represent the Hydra of Lerna, a primordial water monster defeated by Heracles. Like it’s siblings Cerberus, Chimera and the Nemean Lion, Hydra inspired fear and awe. The creature was characterized by its multitude of heads and poisonous breath. Its function was guardianship of an entrance to the Underworld located at the bottom of the Lake of Lerna. Hydra may be analogous to the Vedic deity Shesha, who is depicted as a massive serpent with many heads. Shesha is king of the Nagas, or subterranean serpent folk, and is said to be an avatar of the Supreme God.

Shesha lends his name to the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar Mansion,  of Ashlesha. Ashlesha is symbolized by a serpent and presided over by the Nagas. This asterism, which includes Alminliar Shuja, is associated with the dawning of the spiritual impulse in humans as well as personal charisma and healing abilities.

Of the influence of Hydra, Robson states, « It is said to give an emotional and passionate nature, threatened by great troubles. »

Jupiter conjunct Yildun,  Orb: 0 deg 24 min

Good fortune is denoted, as is a love of music, dance and celebration. There may be an inherent sense of joy and optimism. Loyalty and service to others may also be an important part of life.

Yildun is Delta Ursae Minoris in the constellation of Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. The name Yildun is derived from the Turkish Yilduz, meaning « Excellent Star ». An auspicious influence is implied. Other variations on this name include Vilidur and Gildun.

In Rome this star was among the Circitores, stars perceived as celebratory dancers encircling Polaris.

The nearby constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear, was personified in Greek myth as Callisto, whose name means « Most Beautiful ». Callisto was a wood nymph who was transformed into a bear by the Artemis when the goddess discovered that Callisto had been impregnated by Zeus. The child Callisto gave birth to was Arcas, who was known to be a great hunter. Ursa Minor often represents Arcas.

In some variations, the constellation of Bootes, the Herdsman, is thought to be Arcas, and Ursa Minor not a bear but one of the hunter’s loyal canine companions. Concepts of constancy, faithfulness and service to others are implied by these metaphors.

Another Greek legend  casts the stars of Ursa Minor as the Hesperides, a sisterhood of nymphs who tended Hera’s orchard of golden apples. These golden apples bestowed the power of immortality. The garden of the Hesperides was a gift from Gaia, the Earth Goddess, to Hera, the Queen of the Gods, upon her wedding to Zeus. It was an arboreal paradise akin to the biblical Garden of Eden. In addition to caring for the apples of immortality, the Hesperides delighted in song and dance. The garden was guarded  by the dragon Ladon, who lay coiled at the base of the trees. This idyllic utopia was disrupted by Heracles when he slew Ladon and stole the golden apples as one of his famous Twelve Labors.

Of the nature of Ursa Minor Robson states, « According to Ptolemy the bright stars are like Saturn and to some degree like Venus. . .By the Kabalists it s associated with the Hebrew letter Tau and the 21st Tarot Trump, the Universe (also known as the World). »

Saturn conjunct Megrez,  Orb: 0 deg 18 min

Intelligence, fortitude, perseverance, prudence and strength of will are indicated. The individual may excel at intellectual, literary or scholarly pursuits. Grace and athletic ability are also denoted. There may be a great sense of destiny or commitment to a higher purpose. Eminence may be gained through patient and methodical work.

Megrez is Delta Ursae Majoris in the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The name Megrez is derived from the Arabic Al Maghrez, meaning « the Root of the Tail ». This title refers to Megrez’s position within the celestial figure of Ursa Major.

In China this star was known as Tien Kuen, meaning « Heavenly Authority ». The concept of divine providence is also evidenced in Vedic tradition, which associates the seven bright stars of Ursa Major with the saptarishis, or Seven Great Sages, a group of divinely inspired beings who manage the affairs of our galaxy. Megrez corresponds to the sage Atri. Atri, a legendary scholar and bard, was the mind-born son of Brahma, the Great Creator. He is revered for his spiritual purity and discipline. Atri, whose name may mean « One Who Progresses », married Anasuya, whose name means « Free From Envy ». Atri is credited with the composition of Book Five of the Rig Veda. This book contains hymns celebrating various deities, chiefly Agni, the God of Fire, and Indra, King of the Gods. It is one of the oldest religious texts still in use today.

Ursa Major, also known today as The Big Dipper, is one of the brightest and most recognizable constellations in the night sky and has historically fascinated humanity. In England it is seen as a plough, and in Burma as a lobster. In Arabia this constellation is seen as a funeral procession, with the three stars forming a line (the « tail » of the bear) being mourners following a coffin.

In Greek myth the Great Bear was Callisto, whose name means « Most Beautiful ». Callisto was a nymph who was transformed into a bear by the goddess Artemis when Artemis discovered that Callisto had been impregnated by Zeus. The child Callisto gave birth to was Arcas, who was known to be a great hunter.

Iroquois legend also refers to Ursa Major as a bear, with the four stars which form a rectangular pattern being the bear itself and the three which form a line being hunters in pursuit.

Robson states that, « According to Ptolemy, Ursa Major is like Mars. It is said  to give a quiet, prudent, suspicious, mistrustful, self-controlled, patient nature, but an uneasy spirit and great anger and revengefulness when roused. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Zain and the 7th Tarot Trump, The Chariot. » According to Allen, the association of this constellation with a bear « may have arisen from Aristotle’s idea that it’s prototype was the only creature that dared to invade the frozen North. »  Thus the Great Bear is a symbol of strength, fortitude and perseverance.

Saturn conjunct Phacd,  Orb: 0 deg 17 min

Inner strength, wisdom, self-reliance and perseverance are denoted. An assertive, aggressively assiduous and diligent nature may manifest. There may be an inclination towards leadership. A love of knowledge and education may manifest, as may a deep appreciation of nature.

Phacd (also known as Phecda, Phekda and Phad) is Gamma Ursae Majoris in the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The name Phacd is derived from the Arabic Al Falidh, or « the Thigh (of the Bear) ».

Vedic tradition associates the seven bright stars of Ursa Major with the saptarishis, or Seven Great Sages, a group of divinely inspired beings who manage the affairs of our galaxy and are credited with the composition of the Vedas. Phacd corresponds to the sage Pulastya, whose name means  « Having Smooth Hair ». Pulastya was the grandfather of Kubera, king of the benevolent nature spirits known as yakshas. The yakshas are the stewards of natural treasures beneath the earth, lending to Kubera’s title, « Lord of Wealth ». Pulastya’s other grandson, Ravana, is the king of the rakshasas, or cannibalistic demons. Ravana is fearsome, yet also scholarly, competent and loyal. Pulastya is also the father of the sage Agatsya.

In China Phacd is known as Ke Seuen Ke, or « Another Armillary Sphere ». Merak (Beta Ursae Majoris) is also known an Armillary Sphere. This term refers to a spherical astrolabe, a device employed by ancient astronomers to make astronomical and calendrical calculations.

Ebertin states that Phacd « corresponds to Mars, with (an) added touch of Uranus and Neptune ».

Ursa Major, also known today as The Big Dipper, is one of the brightest and most recognizable constellations in the night sky and has historically fascinated humanity. Alioth, the first star in the line, is said to be the hunter who carries the weapons to kill the bear. The two which follow (Mizar and Alkaid) carry implements to cook the bear.

Robson states that, « According to Ptolemy, Ursa Major is like Mars. Saturn conjunct Praecipua,  Orb: 0 deg 07 min

Courage, pride, self-involvement, expressiveness and inner strength are denoted. The individual may be suited for a position of great responsibility and authority. Matters involving public visibility, such as politics and acting are favored, as are creative pursuits. Generosity towards others, as well as high standards for oneself are likely. Great respect may be gained through one’s work.

Praecipua is 46 Leo Minoris in the constellation of Leo Minor, the Little Lion. This constellation, which lies between Leo and Ursa Major, was created by Johannes Hevelius in 1687 CE. It was intended to represent a diminutive form of the larger constellation of Leo. Prior to Hevelius’ time, this faint group of stars was not generally considered to be a constellation. They may have been associated with the Arabic asterism Al Thiba wa-Auladuha, « the Gazelle with her Young », or with Al Haud, « the Pond », into which the celestial Gazelle leapt.

Allen relates that the ancient Egyptians associated this portion of the sky with the god Ptah. Ptah was a creation deity credited with forming the world by speaking, or singing, it into existence. His name means « the Opener », since he opened his mouth to create the world. Ptah was allied with the concepts of life, stability and power in ancient Egypt. These themes may also relate to his corner of the cosmos, and thus  Praecipua.

The name Praecipua is Latin for « Chief », as this is the brightest star in Leo Minor. Leadership, authority, excellence and magnificence may be implied by this title, as well as by the symbolism of the Lion. Lions have long been revered by humans and identified with the qualities of grace, nobility, strength and courage. In fact, the oldest known figurine combining human and animal attributes is a stone carving of a lion-headed man. This « Lion Man »  was discovered in Germany’s Hohlenstein-Stadel cave and is attributed to the Upper Paleolithic Aurignacian civilization. It is currently dated to be 32,000 years old.

Lions are seen depicted in the art of virtually every ancient civilization including Babylon, Assyria and Mycenae. The Ancient Egyptians worshipped the deity Sehkmet, who is portrayed as a woman with the head of a lion. Sehkmet was the ferocious and fearsome goddess of War. She was invoked for courage in battle. Similarly, in India lions were the emblem of the Kshatriya, or warrior class. The Indian goddess Durga, a fierce warrior and divine protector, is often seen riding a lion. The Nubian god Dedun, who came to be associated with wealth and prosperity, also took the form of a lion.

Of the nature of Leo Minor Robson states, « It gives a generous, noble, peaceable, but fearless nature, with the ability to undertake prominent and responsible positions. »

Saturn conjunct Regulus,  Orb: 0 deg 56 min

Pride, self-confidence, ambition, optimism, generosity, foresight and leadership abilities are indicated. The individual may be suited for a public position of great responsibility. Expressive and theatrical pursuits are favored, as are military, political and financial endeavors. Great success in any chosen undertaking is probable and eminence may be gained through ones work. There may also be a great love of ceremony, ritual and tradition.

According to Robson, « Just, friends among clergy, success in Church or law, scholarly, wealth, gain. . .high position, proud of home and family, good health. . . »

Regulus is Alpha Leonis in the constellation of Leo, the Lion. The name Regulus is Latin for « Little King ». This star has historically been associated with kingship and royalty. In ancient Babylon it was known as Sharu, « the King ». The ancient Turanians knew it as Masu, meaning « the Hero ». In Arabia it was called Malikiyy, or « Kingly ». In Rome Regulus was referred to as Basilica Stella, « the Royal Star », a title later shortened to Basilicus. It was alternately entitled Cor Leonis, « the Heart of the Lion », which it designates. Similarly, it was known as Al Kalb al Asad, « the Heart of the Lion », in Arabia.

In China Regulus was known as « the Great Star in Heen Yuen », a constellation named for an imperial family.

In ancient Persia, where it was known as Miyan, « the Center », Regulus was among the Four Royal Stars. Also known as « the Watchers » or « the Guardians of Heaven », these stars were used by the Persians as a seasonal calendar, each being associated with one of the four directions and either a solstice or an equinox. Regulus, « the Watcher of the North », marked the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.

Regulus is the primary component of the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar Mansion, of Magha. Magha means « Mighty » or « Magnificent ». It is traditionally symbolized by a throne or throne room. The theme of this nakshatra is leadership, dominion, status and success as well as continuity of ritual and tradition. Its ruling deities are the Pitris, or ancestral spirits. In accordance with the Classical and Arabian traditions, Regulus was directly associated with royalty in ancient India.

This star is also included in the manzil, or Arabic Lunar Mansion, of Al Jabbah. Al Jabbah means « the Forehead », a title alluding to themes of leadership. According to Robson, this manzil « strengthens buildings, promotes love, benevolence, and help against enemies ».

Regulus was also one of the fifteen Behenian fixed stars listed by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa in his text De Occulta Philosophia. These stars were considered by Medieval astrologer/magicians in Europe and Arabia to be potent sources of power. The name Behenian derives from the Arabic word bahman, or « Root », as these stars were perceived as points of origin for the essences of the planets. In this text Agrippa associates Regulus with the planets Jupiter and Mars. Agrippa also lists two terrestrial materials analogous to the influence of Regulus; the herb mugwort and the stone granite.

Of the influence of Regulus Robson states, « According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Mars and Jupiter, but most authors liken it to Mars only, while Alvidas states that it is similar to the Sun in good aspect to Uranus. It gives. . .military honor. . .success, high and lofty ideals and strength of spirit, and makes its natives magnanimous, grandly liberal, generous, ambitious, fond of power, desirous to command, high-spirited and independent. »

Ebertin concurs with the Jupiter-Mars influence originally cited by Ptolemy and later by Agrippa, elucidating that Regulus « may convey royal properties, noble mind, frankness (and) courage. »

The greater constellation of Leo is generally thought to represent the Nemean Lion, the vicious child of Typhon and Echidna, who was slain by Hercules.

The Nubian god Dedun, who came to be associated with wealth and prosperity, also took the form of a lion.

Robson quotes Ptolemy on the nature of Leo; « Of the stars in Leo, the two in the head are like Saturn and partly like Mars. The three in the neck are like Saturn and in some degree like Mercury. . . Those in the loins. . .Saturn and Venus: those in the thighs resemble Venus and in some degree Mercury ». Robson also states that « By the Kabalists, Leo is associated with the Hebrew letter Kaph and the 11th Tarot Trump, Strength ».

Uranus conjunct Zuben Elakribi,  Orb: 0 deg 09 min

Interests may lie in justice, law, ethics, morality or social organization. A diplomatic role may be taken. The practice of achieving equilibrium and harmony in ones environment may be a consistent life theme. A high level of mental activity is also denoted. Social, cultural, legal, intellectual, judicial, executive, political and creative activities are favored; as are all pursuits requiring a good sense of balance.

Zuben Elakribi is Delta Librae in the constellation of Libra, the Scales. The name Zuben Elakribi is derived from the Arabic Al Zuban al Akrab, meaning « the Claws of the Scorpion ». This title arose from the ancient perception of Libra not as its own constellation, but as the claws of the neighboring constellation of Scorpio.

According to Allen, this star was included in the Akkadian asterism Mulu-izi, meaning « Man of Fire ». This asterism was associated with the obscure star god Laterak.

The constellation Libra represents the Scales of Justice held by the ancient Greek goddess Astraea. Astraea, whose name means « Star Maiden », was the daughter of Zeus (Jupiter) and the Titaness Themis. The name Themis translates to « Natural Law » or « that which is put in place ». Themis and her daughter are both divinities personifying Justice, Order and Truth. Astraea is often associated with the constellation Virgo, the Virgin, which borders Libra in the night sky and precedes it in the zodiac wheel.

Justitia, the Roman equivalent to Astraea, lends her name to the English word justice. She was personified as a bare-chested woman holding scales in one hand and a sword in the other, symbolizing judgment and consequences. Today she is known as Lady Justice and still presides over courtrooms. She is now typically depicted with a blindfold over her eyes, an accoutrement of the Roman deity Fortuna, the goddess of Luck.

The scales of Libra also reflect the image of the scales of Ma’at, the Egyptian goddess of Law, Morality and Justice. Like Themis and Astraea, Ma’at concerns herself with the ordering of natural forces. The Egyptian Books of the Dead (texts which describe the soul’s journey after death) tell of a ceremonial trial of the afterlife. During this trial, one’s heart is placed on a scale to be weighed against the feather of Ma’at. If the heart is lighter than the feather the soul may continue existence. If the heart outweighs the feather, however, it is consumed by Ammit, a terrifying creature who appears in a composite form as part leopard, part crocodile and part hippopotamus.

Libra is unique among the constellations of the zodiac as it the only one to be represented by an object rather than a person or animal. It is also the newest addition to the zodiac. The ancients saw it not in it’s present form but as Chelae Scorpius, « the Claws of the Scorpion ».

Of Libra’s astrological properties Robson quotes Ptolemy; « Those stars at the points of the claws of Scorpio operate like Jupiter and Mercury: those in the middle of the claws, like Saturn and in some degree like Mars. » Robson also states that Libra is associated with the eighth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, Heth, and the 8th Tarot Trump, Justice. The number eight is often invoked to describe systems of divine order and natural harmony. Some examples are the Eight Immortals of Chinese myth, the Eight Vasus (« Excellences ») of Hindu tradition, the Eight Angels who carry the throne of Allah in Islam, and the Eight Great Boddisatvas embodying aspects of the Noble Eightfold Path in Buddhism.

Uranus conjunct Zuben Elgenubi,  Orb: 0 deg 03 min

An intensely motivated, focused and goal-oriented nature is indicated. The practice of achieving equilibrium and harmony in ones environment may be a consistent life theme. Interests may lie in justice, law, ethics, morality, judgment or diplomacy. A high level of mental activity is also denoted. Social, cultural, legal, intellectual, athletic and creative activities are favored; as are all pursuits requiring a good sense of balance.

Zuben Elgenubi is Alpha Librae in the constellation of Libra, the Scales. The name Zuben Elgenubi is derived from the Arabic Al Zuban al Janubiyyah, meaning « the Southern Claw ». This title arose from the ancient perception of Libra not as its own constellation, but as the claws of the neighboring constellation of Scorpio.

Zuben Elgenubi is included in the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar Mansion, of Vishakha. Vishakha means « Forked » or « Poison Vessel ». Its ruling deities are Indra, the King of the Gods, and Agni, the God of Fire. Vishakha is associated with sacrifice, triumph and a single-minded desire for accomplishment or power. It is thus symbolized by the triumphal arch, an icon of the celebration of great achievement.

This star was also a part of the Babylonian ecliptic asterism Nuru-sha-shutu, « the Southern Light ».

Neptune conjunct Rasalgethi,  Orb: 0 deg 31 min

Strength of character, the will to overcome adverse circumstances, and formidable ambition are indicated. The individual may face many great challenges which ultimately lead to gain and growth. Energetic, persevering, motivated and obstinate characteristics are denoted. Worldly success is possible. Creative, academic, commercial, political and athletic pursuits are favored.

Rasalgethi (or Ras Algethi) is Alpha 1 Herculei in the constellation of Hercules, the Hero. The name Rasalgethi is derived from the Arabic phrase Al Ras al Jathiyy, meaning « the Head of the Kneeling One », which this star designates.

It was also known in ancient Arabia as Al Kalb al Rai, the Shepherd’s Dog. This title implies themes of loyalty and service.

In China Rasalgethi is referred to as Ti Tso, the Emperor’s Seat.

Ebertin states that this star, « possesses a character of Mars-Venus with a slight blend of Mercury », expounding that, « Ras Algethi corresponds to boldness and a drive to gain power. »

Hercules is the Roman equivalent to the Greek semi-divine hero Heracles, whose name means « Glory of Hera ». He is associated with the qualities of strength, courage, virility, valor and ingenuity.

According to Allen, the figure of Hercules is synonymous with the Sumerian demigod Izhdubar. Izhdubar, now known as Gilgamesh, was a legendary king of Uruk. He was the son of the goddess Ninsun, or « Lady Wild Cow ». Similarly, Hercules was half-human and half-deity, being the son of Zeus (Jupiter) and the mortal woman Alcmene.

Both Hercules and Gilgamesh are noted for their heroic adventures. In Hercules’ legend, he is driven temporarily insane by the goddess Hera. In his fit of madness, he murders his wife Megara (whose name means « Great Houses ») and their children. After a period of depression upon regaining his sanity, Hercules is informed by the Delphic Oracle that he may redeem himself by accomplishing  twelve nearly impossible feats, most of which include the slaughter or capture of chthonic beasts such as the Hydra, the Cretan Bull, and Nemean Lion. These feats are collectively known as the « Twelve Labors of Hercules ». Gilgamesh embarked on similar missions. He is often portrayed in the act of vanquishing the same creatures as those defeated by Hercules, namely serpents, lions and bulls. The constellation Hercules is in close proximity to the constellation Draco, the Dragon, which may in this case represent the Hydra slain by Hercules or the primordial serpentine storm goddess Tiamat, an enemy of Gilgamesh. Allen tells us that Gilgamesh’s « well-known adventures are supposed to refer to the sun’s passage through the twelve zodiac signs, appearing thus on tablets of the 7th century before Christ ». This allegorical meaning may apply to Hercules’ cycle as well, as he accomplished the same number of labors as there are signs of the zodiac.

The stories of Hercules and Gilgamesh also share the common theme of mourning. Hercules’ adventures were an act of repentance for the murder of his family, and are thus colored by melancholy. Gilgamesh laments the death of his friend and companion Enkidu. He broods over this loss and is reluctant to bury the body of his fallen comrade. These legends also share a theme of the search for immortality. Both heroes become immortalized at the end of their sagas. The concepts of challenge and victory, love and loss, and the quest for the immortality of the soul are matters that may be intrinsically tied to the nature of the constellation Hercules. The solar symbolism of Gilgamesh described by Allen contributes to the notion of a Sun-like influence being emitted by the stars of this constellation. This influence may be summated in the Roman concept of Sol Invictus, « The Unconquered Sun ».

The ancient Phoenicians associated this constellation with Melkarth (also spelled Melqart), whose name means « King of the City ». Melkarth was the patron deity of the Phoenician city of Tyre in what is now Lebanon. His mythos bore such a resemblance to that of Hercules that he was referred to as simply « the Tyrian Heracles/Hercules » by the Greeks and Romans. The legends of Melkarth, Gilgamesh and Heracles may all share a common origin.

Another title of the constellation Hercules is « the Kneeling Man ». One possible explanation for this title, provided by Robson, is that during the war between the Olympian Gods and the Titans, Hercules assisted Atlas in holding up the heavens, and is shown bending under their weight. Hercules was indeed burdened by his strange fate, his fabled strength was gained in reaction to unfortunate circumstances.

This constellation has also been known by the name Prometheus. According to Allen, the association of this constellation with Prometheus, the Titan who gave humanity the sacred gift of fire, owes to the fact that Prometheus bent in his chains on Caucasus, where he was eternally tormented by Zeus for his act of insubordination against the gods. Both Hercules and Prometheus were primarily engaged in acts of repentance.

Prometheus means « Forethought ». His presence in the lore of this constellation adds a dimension of intelligence and compassion unaccounted for by the character of Hercules.

Of the astrological influence of the constellation Hercules Robson states; « According to Ptolemy it is like Mercury. It is said to give strength of character, tenacity and fixity of purpose, an ardent nature and dangerous passions. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Daleth and the 4th Tarot Trump, the Emperor. »

Pluto conjunct Kraz,  Orb: 0 deg 37 min

Astute, intelligent, crafty and communicative qualities are indicated. A progressive, forward-thinking mentality and an interest in future events is probable. The individual may philosophically or technologically pioneer concepts « ahead of their time », or become adept at anticipating future trends and developments. A desire to facilitate communication between others may arise. Manual dexterity and skill in craftsmanship is also denoted. There may be some love of political intrigue and games of strategy.

Kraz is Beta Corvi in the constellation of Corvus, the Crow. The origin of the name Kraz is somewhat obscure, but it is most commonly thought to arise from the Latin word cras, meaning « tomorrow ». Cras is the root of the  English word procrastinate, literally, « to put off until tomorrow ».

In ancient Rome, the sound made by crows was interpreted as « Cras, Cras! » or « Tomorrow, Tomorrow! ». Not surprisingly, the Romans, as the Greeks before them, associated crows with prophetic visions of the future.

Apollo, the ancient Greek god of light, reason, music, poetry, medicine and prophecy, employed crows to deliver his messages as well as to bring him news of the world. One tale relates how Apollo turned all crows black (they were previously white) after one unfortunate bird informed the god of his lover’s infidelity. Apollo is also credited with bestowing the honor of announcing all important deaths upon the crow. Although the crow’s position as errand-boy may bespeak unquestioning subservience, this creature is in fact portrayed in classical myth as a crafty, opportunistic trickster. Once the messenger of Athena,  the crow was replaced by the owl because of Athena’s distaste for the black bird’s incessant gossip.

In the story most often connected to this constellation, Apollo gave the crow a goblet to fetch water. The crow dallied, eating figs, until much later remembering his mission. Grabbing the water filled cup, as well as a snake, he returned to Apollo and told him that the snake had delayed him. Wise Apollo was not fooled and threw the Crow, the Cup and the Snake into the heavens, where they became the constellations Corvus, Crater and Hydra.

As the name Kraz evokes the oracular shriek of the crow, concepts and visions of the future may figure prominently in the lives of it’s natives. It may also connote the loquacious and quick-witted nature of the crow, as well as the civilized and multi-talented character of Apollo.

The Chinese name for this star is Tso Hea, or « the Left Hand Linch-pin », the significance of which is unknown.

Kraz is also a part of the nakshatra, or Vedic Lunar Mansion, Hasta. Hasta means « the Hand »,  and is presided over by the laughing trickster Savitar, a solar deity. Hasta relates to craftsmanship and all work done with hands, as well as mental fortitude. Natives of Hasta are known for their cleverness, cunning, and skill with games and trickery. Interestingly, these qualities are often ascribed to the crow as well.

Of the nature of the constellation Corvus, Robson states, « According to Ptolemy, Corvus is like Mars and Saturn. It is said  to give craftiness, greediness, ingenuity, patience, revengefulness, passion, selfishness, lying, aggressiveness, and material instincts, and sometimes causes it’s natives to become agitators. »

Pluto conjunct Seginus,  Orb: 0 deg 55 min

Practical, patient, hardworking, dependable and loyal qualities are indicated. There may be a tendency to become very protective of ones family, friends, community or nation. A keenly observant and highly innovative intellect is possible. Deep fulfillment through ones work likely. Agricultural, commercial, mechanical, literary, journalistic, creative, educational and scientific pursuits are favored, as are all activities requiring endurance.

Seginus is Gamma Bootis in the constellation of Bootes, the Herdsman. The name Seginus is derived from Theguius, the Greek name of this constellation.

An alternate title for Seginus is Haris, which arises from the Arabic Al Haris al Sama, or « the Keeper (or Guard) of Heaven ». Protective, attentive, watchful and defensive attributes may therefore be ascribed to this star.

Seginus was also was also included in the Arabic asterism Al Dhi’bah, meaning the « the Female Wolves (or Hyenas) ». This star’s association with these predatory beasts may reveal  fierce and aggressive characteristics as well.

Robson states that the influence of Seginus is « of the nature of Saturn and Mercury », further claiming that this star « gives a subtle mind ».

The character represented by the constellation Bootes is somewhat elusive. Some call Bootes « the Bear Watcher », due to its proximity to Ursa Major. It has been identified with Arcas the Hunter, the son of Callisto, the nymph who was transformed into a bear after her love affair with Zeus. Bootes is more commonly, however, identified as a celestial herdsman.

According to one Greek legend, the figure of Bootes was the person who invented the plough. This agricultural innovator so pleased the goddess Demeter that she petitioned Zeus to place him in the sky for posterity.

The name Bootes comes from the Latin root bos or bov, meaning « cow », from which we derive the English word « bovine ». This identifies Bootes as a cowherd rather than a shepherd.

Cows are traditionally associated with the qualities of stability, patience, strength, dependability and stubbornness. They have been revered for the life-sustaining properties of their meat, milk and hides. The Egyptian goddess Hathor, who is traditionally depicted in the form of a cow or as a woman with bull horns atop her head, is the patroness of fertility, motherhood, earthly abundance, joy and celebration. Similarly, the Olympian goddess Hera, consort of Zeus (Jupiter) and Queen of the Gods, bore the epithet Bo-opis, or « Ox Eyed ». Another bovine divinity acknowledged in ancient Egypt is Apis, a solar bull god associated with agriculture and nourishment. Apis was said to be the soul (ka) of the god Osiris.

In India the divine cow Nandi was recognized as the primary disciple, gatekeeper and mount of the god Shiva. Reverence for Nandi dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The Indians also venerate Kamadhenu, the mother of all cows, a benevolent deity said to have the power to grant any wish.

Of the nature of Bootes Robson states, « According to Ptolemy the influence. . .is like that of Mercury and Saturn. It is said to give prosperity from work, strong desires, a tendency to excess, and a fondness for rural pursuits, together with some liking for occultism. The Kabalists associate it with the Hebrew letter Teth and the 9th Tarot Trump, the Hermit. »

Asc. conjunct Anser,  Orb: 0 deg 44 min

Clever, cunning, resourceful, strategic, intelligent, responsive, communicative and eloquent qualities are indicated. There may also be a great love of beauty, sensuality and luxury. Creative, social, romantic, literary, linguistic, intellectual and commercial pursuits are favored. Popularity and material gain are likely.

Anser is Alpha Vulpeculae in the constellation of Vulpecula, the Little Fox. The name Anser is Latin for « Goose ». This name comes from the original title of the constellation, Vulpecula et Anser, which was invented by astronomer Johannes Hevelius in the late 17th century. Hevelius perceived this constellation as representing a little fox with a goose in his mouth, but provided no allegorical or mythological significance for this image.

In European and North American mythology, foxes are associated with the archetype of the Trickster and the qualities of cleverness, resourcefulness, guile and elusiveness. These Mercurial qualities may be attributed to the constellation of Vulpecula as well. Chinese folklore speaks of « fox women », cunning shapeshifters with a penchant for seduction. The Japanese deity Inari, who presides over fertility and agriculture, employs white foxes as divine messengers. Inari is may be portrayed as a man, a woman, or an androgynous being. Androgyny is also an attribute of the god Mercury, further solidifying the connection between Vulpecula and Mercury. Inari’s association with fertility and agriculture, as well as the Chinese fox women’s erotic nature points to a secondary Venusian element.

As for Anser, the unlucky goose caught in the jaws of Vulpecula, he may carry both Mercurial and Venusian symbolism a well. Geese were considered the Messengers of the Gods in Ancient Egypt, and later on in the Roman Empire. In Classical Greece geese were interchangeable with swans as symbols of the grace of the love goddess Aphrodite (Venus). The Sumerian fertility/prosperity goddess Bau, whose name means « Lady of Abundance », was often depicted with geese.

Geese were also perceived as Solar symbols in many parts of Europe and Asia, as their annual migrations marked the waxing and waning of the Sun’s presence on Earth.

Of the astrological influence of Vulpecula et Anser, Robson states, « It gives a cunning, voracious and fierce nature, together with a keen mind. »

Descendant conjunct Aludra,  Orb: 0 deg 46 min

A developed sense of instinct and intuition is denoted. Concepts of loyalty and commitment may be held in high regard. The individual may feel compelled to protect or defend their family, community or social group. A generous nature is possible.

Aludra is Eta Canis Majoris in the constellation of Canis Major, the Great Dog. The name Aludra is derived from the Arabic Al-‘Udhrah, meaning « the Virgins ».

The constellation of Canis Major has been associated with a few different mythological canines. Most commonly it is said to represent the hunting dog of Orion, who chases a hare (the constellation Lepus). It has also been associated with Laeleps, a magical hunting dog imbued with the gift of always catching his prey. Laeleps was a gift from Zeus to Europa along with a javelin that never missed its target .

In another Classical context, Canis Major may be Cerberus, the hound who guards the subterranean realm of Hades. Cerberus corresponds to the Egyptian Anubis, the jackal-headed death god.

In Classical myth, dogs are commonly portrayed as the companions of Artemis/Diana, the Lunar goddess of the Wilderness and the Hunt, as well as her ally (or possibly prototype) Hecate, the three-faced goddess of the Crossroads. Dogs represent loyalty and commitment to family and tribe, as well as self-preservation through instinct and protection from malevolent forces.

Although Artemis was originally a fertility deity, she later became known as a Virginal Goddess. It may be this aspect of her complex nature that relates to the meaning of Aludra.

Of the nature of Canis Major Robson writes, « Ptolemy states that the stars of this constellation, with the exception of Sirius, are like Venus. It is said to give good qualities, charity and a faithful heart, but violent and dangerous passions. . .Canis Major is connected by the Kabalists with the Hebrew letter Tzaddi and the 18th Tarot Trump, the Moon. »

MC conjunct Toliman,  Orb: 0 deg 05 min

Passionate, energetic, ambitious, self-confident, talented and intrepid qualities are indicated. Healing abilities may also be denoted. The individual may exude an intense, charismatic or seductive persona. Exoteric power in the form of wealth and/or fame may be attained, as may a wide breadth of knowledge. Close friendships are also held in high regard.

Toliman, the closest visible star to our Sun and third brightest star in the sky, is Alpha Centauri A in the constellation of Centaurus, the Centaur. The origin of the name Toliman is unknown, although Robson claims that it may be translated as « Heretofore and Hereafter ». It has also been hypothesized to arise from the Arabic al-Zulman, or « the Ostriches ».

This star, located in the hoof of the celestial Centaur, has also been referred to by the names Rigel Kentaurus and Bungula. Rigel Kentaurus is derived from the Arabic Al Rijl al Kentaurus, or « the Foot of the Centaur ». This is sometimes shortened to Rigel, although that name more commonly signifies Beta Orionis. Similarly, the title Bungula arises from the Latin ungula, or « Hoof ».

Along with Agena (Beta Centauri), Toliman was included in the Arabic asterisms Hadar, meaning « Ground » and Wazn, meaning « Weight ». This may be because these stars only appeared very close to the horizon in northern latitudes. These stars were also included in the Chinese asterism Nan Mu, « the South Gate », ostensibly owing to their appearance on the southern horizon.

Toliman was revered in ancient Egypt. Allen notes that « its first visible emergence from the sun’s rays, in the morning at the autumn equinox, has been connected by Lockyer with the orientation of at least nine temples ». In the ancient Nile Valley this star was cognate to the goddess Serket.

Serket, the Scorpion Goddess, is a deity of healing and medicinal knowledge. In Cuba, researchers became aware of the healing properties of scorpion venom after observing its use by local folk doctors. The ancient Egyptians were undoubtedly aware of this phenomenon as well. The name Serket is often translated as « One Who Tightens the Throat » and alternately as « One Who Allows the Throat to Breathe ». These two paradoxical titles allude to the scorpion’s ability to either heal or harm.

This goddess was also associated with royal power. She was signified as the patron deity of many pharaohs. This theme is also evidenced by the traditional astrological association of Toliman with worldly power and success.

Robson states that, « According to Ptolemy (Toliman) is of the nature of Venus and Jupiter; and, to Alvidas, of Mars with the Moon and Uranus in Scorpio. » It is noteworthy that Alvidas links Toliman to the sign of the Scorpion, the animal associated by the Egyptians with the goddess Serket and thus with this star.

Robson goes on to profess, « It gives beneficence, friends, refinement and a position of honor. »

Ebertin also cites a « Jupiter-Venus nature » in relation to Toliman, stating that this star « may help the native gain a position of honor and power ».

The greater constellation of Centaurus represents a centaur. Centaurs are fantastic beasts of Greek myth with the upper body of a human sprouting from the lower body of a horse. There has been some speculation that the legend of the Centaurs was inspired by the invading tribes who came to Europe from Central Asia on horseback. These wild men, whose skill at riding must have made them appear to be merged as one entity with their horses, were experts with the bow and arrow.

These « centaurs » were depicted in Greek art and literature as mainly uncivilized, brutal and warlike in manner, with the exception of Chiron. Chiron was a teacher who nurtured the intellects of such renowned figures as the great healer Asclepius, Jason, the captain hero of the Golden Fleece cycle, and Aristaeus, the first bee-keeper. Chiron was known not only for his wide breadth of knowledge of the healing arts, astrology, divination and philosophy, but also for his gentle and good-humored nature.

Centaurus is associated with Chiron, and alternately with Pholos. Pholos was another unusually gentle Centaur. His myth involves his hospitality to the hero Heracles (Hercules), which led to his untimely and accidental death by one of the hero’s poisoned arrows. For his kindness, Zeus is said to have placed him in the sky as this constellation.

In ancient Mesopotamia this constellation  was perceived as a bull. The Greek and Mesopotamian interpretations of Centaurus were sometimes merged as figure of the Minotaur, a  hybrid of man and bull. The Minotaur is hypothesized by some mythologists to be a form of the Phoenician deity Moloch. Moloch, a Sun God whose name means « King », was portrayed as a man with the head of a bull.

Of the astrological influence of Centaurus Robson states, « According to Ptolemy the stars in the human part of the figure are of the nature of Venus and Mercury, and the bright stars in the horse’s part of Venus and Jupiter. It is said to give hard-heartedness, inclination to vengeance, love of arms, strong passions and an energetic nature. »

IC conjunct Alrischa,  Orb: 0 deg 36 min

An exuberant, spirited, ingenious, creative, vital, glamorous and alluring  individual who employs their natural talents to connect with others is indicated. Empathetic, intuitive, romantic and prophetic qualities are denoted as well. Strong emotional bonds to friends and family members may be formed. Mutually beneficial alliances play a crucial role in life.

Alrischa (also spelled Alrisha or Alrescha) is Alpha Piscium in the constellation of Pisces, the Fish. The name Alrischa is derived from the Arabic Al Risha, meaning « the Cord ». This star was so named because it was thought to represent the knotted cord which connects the two fish of Pisces. Another Arabic title for this star is Al Hait al Kattaniyy, meaning « the Flaxen Thread ».

In ancient Greece this star was known as Sundesmos ton Ichthuon, « the Knot of the Fishes », or Ton Linon, « the Thread ».

In the Greek myth which correlates to this constellation,  Aphrodite, the goddess of Love, and her son Eros, the god of Lust,  were pursued by the deadly and fearsome monster Typhon. They jumped into the Euphrates River where they were saved from drowning by two fish. To avoid loosing each other, they were bound by a cord, represented in the firmament by Alrischa.

For their act of heroic rescue, the fish were placed in the sky as a constellation. In another version of this deus ex machina  myth, Aphrodite and Eros transformed into the fish themselves. Themes of triumphant escape and the victory of love are implied by this tale.

Of the nature of the stars of Pisces Robson quotes Ptolemy; « Those stars in Pisces which are in the head of the southern fish have the same influence as Mercury, and, in some degree, as Saturn: those in the body are like Jupiter and Mercury: those in the tail and in the southern line are like Saturn, and, moderately, like Mercury. In the northern fish, those on its body and backbone resemble Jupiter, and also Venus in some degree: those in the northern line are like Saturn and Jupiter. » Robson goes on to say that, « By the Kabalists Pisces is associated with the Hebrew letter Pe and the 17th Tarot Trump, the Star. »
